Your daughters New Horizons therapist may suggest the need for additional assessments when there are concerns regarding diagnosis, medication, personality functioning, or a need to further clarify between behavioral and mental health needs. Requests for additional assessments may also come from schools, educational consultants or other professionals who are working with your daughter and family.

Psychological and psychiatric assessments are an optional service and are available for an additional cost. All referrals for outside assessments will be discussed with and authorized by parent(s) and or guardians prior to an appointment being made.

Psychological Assessments

Psychological testing and assessments are administered by a licensed, doctoral level (PhD or PsyD) psychologist. Psychological evaluations are helpful when there are questions about diagnosis and/or a need to further understand your daughter's underlying mental health issues. Evaluations will help you, your daughter, and the professionals working with your daughter to better understand how your daughter sees and interacts in her world.

A wide variety of psychological tests are available based on areas of need. These psychological evaluations include tests designed to measure IQ, cognitive functioning, academic achievement, neuropsychological screening, personality assessment, social and emotional functioning, alcohol and chemical dependencies and/or abuse.

Information from testing can assist with a more accurate diagnosis, determining treatment needs and behavioral goals, assessing strengths and weaknesses and in recommending appropriate aftercare treatment.

Psychiatric Assessments

Psychiatric assessments are conducted by a medical doctor who has specialized training in understanding mental health disorders and medication issues. A psychiatric assessment typically involves a face to face clinical interview with your daughter, a review of her history, past assessments and testing and talking with the family.

A psychiatric evaluation can assist with diagnosis and treatment and may include a recommendation for medication and appropriate aftercare treatment.
