Does the company provide any gear for the Wilderness Instructors?

We provide a rent-to-own program for employees, pro-deals and local retail discounts.

What are the primary responsibilities of a Wilderness Instructor?

The most important role of the Wilderness Instructor is to build a positive relationship with the student. This includes teaching life skills, facilitating daily "groups" coordinated by the therapist and debriefing conflicts. We also encourage Wilderness Instructors to bring personal knowledge and skills to the wilderness component of the program.

What type of client do you serve?

We serve adolescent females ages 13-18. Most of the girls have behavioral issues regarding relationships with parents, the schools, the community and authority. We also serve addictive behaviors, depression, mild eating disorders and self-harming behaviors.

How long do the girls stay?

We are a 6 to 9 week program. Sometimes girls will stay for a bit longer while parents are finishing up the details of school placements.

How many girls do you have at one time?

At most we will have (8) eight girls with (3) three instructors in a team with the capacity to run two teams simultaneously.

What is the schedule for a Wilderness Instructor?

The Wilderness Instructors work schedule is 8 days on / 6 days off. Shifts begin and end on certain days of the week. Staff coming on-shift are expected to be ready for a staff turn-over meeting at 9 a.m. Staff ending-shift are required to attend the staff turn-over meeting before beginning their 6-days off.

What does a day in the life of a Wilderness Instructor look like?

While on expedition, morning meetings begin at 7:00am to discuss the day's itinerary and possible strategies. Girls wake up at 7:30am to prepare for the day, break camp and continue the expedition. We stop routinely for water breaks and wellness checks and occasionally for a "group" session (definition of group: a meeting of the students and instructors to communicate daily/weekly issues). After arriving at the destination, camp is set up, activities, groups, quiet hours and breaks follow. After dinner and chores there is another check-in and another group session. The schedule follows a similar fashion at base camp, except therapy will replace the expedition itinerary. There is also time set up for showers and laundry.

What is the average mileage of the expeditions?

Expedition mileage varies with seasons, weather conditions and group dynamics. Taking these into consideration the average mileage for canoeing, hiking and snow-shoeing is around 8-9 miles a day.

Is this a seasonal or a year-round position?

Yes! The Wilderness Instructor's position is a year-round position, full time with benefits.

Where do I sleep at night while at work?

New Horizons for Young Women is a base camp model. The team goes on expeditions 5 days and stays at base camp for 2 days. In the warmer months Wilderness Instructors sleep in their own personal tents. In the colder months the Wilderness Instructors sleep in a tent set up for the team with wood heating stoves. While at base camp the team sleeps in bunkhouses equipped with the bare essentials (i.e. beds, wood heat, grey water sink and electricity)

Do you have any positions available for interns?

Yes, we do offer internships for a minimum of two months. We offer on the job learning and an opportunity to present a final project. A $100 Education Contribution per month of internship is offered.

Where is your base of operations?

Our Field House is located in Springfield, Maine (Northern Penobscot County). When in the field, our trips are generally within a two and a half hour radius of our base. Our seasonally appropriate activities include hiking and canoe until the snow and ice restricts our activities. We then snowshoe until ice out in spring.

Who may I contact if I have any further questions?

The Human Resources Department is available if you have additional questions.
